The Waterboys are a Scottish rock band formed in 1983, known for their eclectic sound that blends rock, folk, and Celtic influences. The band was founded by Mike Scott in Edinburgh. The original lineup included members from various backgrounds, contributing to their diverse sound. Their self-titled debut album, The Waterboys (1983), introduced their unique blend of rock and traditional music.

Their 1988 album, Fisherman’s Blues, marked a significant turning point, featuring a more folk-oriented sound. The title track became one of their most recognizable songs. The Waterboys are known for incorporating a range of musical styles, from rock and folk to gospel, often with poetic lyrics that explore themes of spirituality, nature, and love. Their second album (1984) received critical acclaim and included tracks like "The Whole of the Moon," which remains one of their signature songs.

They continued to produce notable albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, such as Dream Harder (1993) and Modern Blues (2015). The band has received praise for their live performances and songwriting, influencing a variety of artists in the rock and folk genres. The Waterboys remain active, touring and releasing new music, with Mike Scott as the driving force behind the band.

The Waterboys have carved out a unique niche in the music world with their fusion of styles and introspective lyrics.
