Glasnevin Cemetery was originally opened in 1832 by a great Liberator, Daniel O’Connell, as a place where people could bury their dead of all religions with dignity. Now a national monument it is a vital part of the Irish Heritage story.
The Museum
The Glasnevin Museum opened in 2010 for people with an interest in Genealogy an Irish Heritage, but it’s also for people that have an interest in art and archaeology.
The Museum features a who’s who of modern Irish history including Daniel O’ Connell, Michael Collins, Charles Stewart Parnell, Éamon de Valera, Arthur Griffith, Countess Markievicz, Michael Cusack, Robert Erskine Childers, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. A guided tour of the Cemetery includes a trip to the crypt of Daniel O’Connell.
Museum Exhibitions
The 1,983 square metres (21,345 sq. ft.) Museum hosts three main feature exhibits:
The City of the Dead
An immersive exhibition in the basement of the Museum. It covers the burial practices and religious beliefs, as well as the meticulous record-keeping, of the 1.5 million people buried in Glasnevin.
The Milestone Gallery
