Father John Misty is the stage name of Josh Tillman, an American singer-songwriter and musician known for his distinctive blend of folk, rock, and indie music, often mixed with sharp wit, dark humor, and introspective lyrics. Before his solo career, Tillman was a member of the indie folk band Fleet Foxes, where he played drums. His experiences in Fleet Foxes heavily influenced his solo work, but his Father John Misty persona marked a shift toward more ambitious and lyrically complex music.

Tillman adopted the Father John Misty moniker in the early 2010s, releasing his debut album, Fear Fun (2012), which was met with critical acclaim. The album featured lush arrangements, an eclectic mix of folk, rock, and country, and an emerging sense of sarcasm and vulnerability in the lyrics. His second album, I Love You, Honeybear (2015), solidified his reputation as one of the most unique voices in contemporary music. It combined lush, orchestral arrangements with brutally honest and often satirical commentary on relationships, fame, and modern life. The album's tracks, such as "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" and "Bored in the USA," showcased his ability to mix humor with deep emotional introspection.

In 2017, Father John Misty released Pure Comedy, an album that took on even larger themes, such as existentialism, politics, and the absurdity of modern life. The album's lush orchestral sound and philosophical lyrics earned him widespread critical acclaim. His 2020 album, God's Favorite Customer, marked a return to more intimate and personal songwriting, blending melancholic reflections on love, mental health, and self-doubt with his characteristic sardonic wit.

Father John Misty’s work is known for its poetic lyricism, clever commentary on societal issues, and an often ironic, self-aware sense of humor. His live performances are dynamic and engaging, further enhancing his status as a leading figure in modern indie music. His ability to navigate between biting satire and deeply vulnerable moments has made him a standout artist in contemporary music.
