Anthrax is an American thrash metal band that was formed in 1981 in New York City. The band is considered one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. The original lineup consisted of: Scott Ian - Rhythm guitar, Charlie Benante on Drums, Dan Lilker on Bass, Neil Turbin on Vocals and Danny Spitz on Lead guitar.
Anthrax gained popularity in the 1980s with albums like "Fistful of Metal" (1984), "Spreading the Disease" (1985), and "Among the Living" (1987). The band is known for their aggressive and fast-paced music, often incorporating humorous or satirical lyrics.
Joey Belladonna replaced Neil Turbin as the vocalist, becoming a significant and enduring member of the band. The classic lineup, featuring Belladonna on vocals, released some of Anthrax's most successful and influential albums, including "Among the Living," which is considered a thrash metal masterpiece.
Over the years, Anthrax has gone through various lineup changes, but Scott Ian and Charlie Benante have remained the core members. The band continued to release albums and tour, maintaining a strong presence in the metal community.
Anthrax is also known for combining elements of metal with other genres, such as rap metal, and for their cover of Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise" in collaboration with Chuck D. The band's versatility and contributions to the thrash metal genre have solidified their place in the history of heavy metal music.
